VANCOUVER – The Urban Development Institute (UDI) has awarded top honours to a Brewery District redevelopment project in New Westminster, British Columbia, co-designed by IBI Group and Henriquez Partners Architects.

Building Two at Brewery District won the award for Best Commercial/Retail Development; it’s the first of eight buildings on the former Labatt brewery site.

Brewery District is a mixed-use, transit-oriented community next to the Royal Columbian Hospital and directly on the Sky Train. When finished, the district will have 1.4 million sq. ft. of retail, office, residential, and health service space on a nine-acre property.

WesGroup Properties, owner of the site, retained IBI Group and Henriquez Partners Architects to develop the planning concept and design. IBI / HPA worked in collaboration with the city, Fraser Health and neighbourhood residents to shape the future of the neighbourhood. The plan included the creation of design guidelines that integrated concepts of sustainability, mixed-use development, complete communities, safety, and security.
