CARDIFF – IBI Group’s Hadyn Ellis Building at Cardiff University played a leading role in the season finale of the television show Sherlock.

The show stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson in a 21st Century version of the duo’s adventures.

In the initial scenes of the finale, His Last Vow, the university’s laboratory spaces are the backdrop for a confrontation between Sherlock and Molly Hooper, his pathologist acquaintance. Later in the show, the building is disguised as a Central London hospital.

Scenes show the main reception, feature staircase, and first floor offices. The last take of the building show the unmistakeable multi-coloured facade, as Dr. Watson and D.I. Greg Lestrade leave the hospital in search of a missing Sherlock.

“When designing a building, you never think it will become a set of a very popular TV drama,” said Richard Golledge, Project Architect. “It is therefore very flattering that the BBC Location Manager chose the Hadyn Ellis Building to re-imagine a contemporary version of the Arthur Conan Doyle classic.”
