IBI Group college modernization wins AIA People’s Choice award
DateOctober 27, 2014
SAN JOSE – IBI Group’s modernization of the West Valley College Campus Center in Saratoga, California, was honored with a People’s Choice Award at the American Institute of Architecture (AIA) Santa Clara Valley Design Awards held October 16.
IBI provided architecture and interior design services for the project. The design challenge was to preserve the center’s 40-year-old foundation and structural frame, while creating a new destination center and home away from home for students.
To open internal space, old walls were removed and replaced with transparent, movable glazing so spaces can expand and contract as the demand arises. Ceiling heights were raised to increase natural daylight and reinforce the interior circulation as well as improve acoustics.
The new Event Center serves as a meeting hall, lounge, and dining hall, and is open to the community for special engagements. The center is surrounded by meeting rooms, food services, a café, media spaces, study lounges, an art gallery, information center, and new bookstore. The project was designed to achieve LEED Silver certification.
The Design Awards are a biennial event for Santa Clara Valley architects who submit built and unbuilt projects for consideration. Project criteria include unique design, originality, extended use attributes, sustainability, budget, and use of environmental surroundings.
