IBI wins top school facility award for Trillium Creek
DateNovember 4, 2014
PORTLAND – Trillium Creek Primary School, located in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District, has been awarded the 2014 Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI) James D. MacConnell Award. The award was presented to DOWA-IBI Group and the school district at the recent CEFPI Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon.
The prestigious award recognizes a comprehensive planning process that results in educational facilities that serve the community, enhance the educational program, and meet multiple goals.
The jurors unanimously selected Trillium Creek Primary School after reviewing over 25 projects, praising the project’s inclusive design process that challenged standard practices. The Award Jury Chair noted, “Through the collaborative and inclusive planning process, Trillium Creek emerged as a kid-friendly, delightful facility with innovative spaces for learning.”
“The foundational idea behind the design was the statement from one of the 5th grade students involved in a design charrette, ‘I want to be the captain of my own learning’,” said Karina Ruiz, DOWA-IBI Group Principal. “This became our guidepost throughout the process and we are excited and incredibly proud that it continues to drive the culture of Trillium Creek.”
The 68,000 sq ft school was designed to house 500 students and sits on a 16-acre site that contains diverse natural elements, including a wetland, forest, and creek. Multiple sustainable features led to the project receiving LEED Gold Certification, including LED energy meters, an on-site PV array, wind turbine and high performing energy management system.
As a building that models environmental restoration, energy efficiencies, responsible and effective water conservation and management, Trillium Creek Primary School provides learning opportunities for students, teachers, and visitors about sustainability and their impacts on the world around them to promote a better understanding of stewardship and being an agent of change.
