The master plan for Ganesha Educational Village envisions a mixed-use development combining multi-purpose public schools with social service operations, adult education facilities, and traditional commercial development in a distressed, overcrowded urban area. The first phase of the project, the $16 million, 60,000 sf Cortez Elementary School - now under construction and scheduled for completion in July of 2006 - will house 700, 4-6 grade students on a 4.38-acre portion of the site.
To respond to unpredictable fluctuations in student enrollment, classroom and support spaces were designed to be highly flexible, allowing for conversion between differing subject areas and grade levels. Moveable partition walls, shared facilities, a large multipurpose room, covered outdoor lunch/meeting areas, exterior seating elements, and widened balconies provide an array of venues for formal and informal learning experiences.
