This 34 classroom school for 800 students was built on a 2.5 acre site in downtown Long Beach. The infrastructure is housed in a single-story concrete structure which wraps around a secured central plaza. The two-acre roof deck provides hard-court play area, effectively increasing the site area almost twofold. A three-story classroom building houses the remaining classrooms connecting at the center level to the play-deck and shielding the school from the busy arterial street. International Elementary School has won numerous local and national awards, including the highest honor given by the American Institute of Architects program for school building. It was hailed by a juror as "a new prototype for inner city schools."
