Martin Luther King Elementary School is a truly successful urban neighborhood school. At 5.6 acres, it is about 50% of the state recommended site size for a school of its capacity. The school density requires a two-story solution, placing administration, library, food service and kindergarten on the ground and classrooms on the upper level. This design creates a scale of structure that is compatible with the residential neighborhood around the school. Set in the midst of a community of single houses, King Elementary School respects the scale and culture of its surroundings, further reinforced through the use of low residential roof forms and color.
