Pueblo Elementary represents a low-cost alternative for urban elementary schools. When an abandoned 100,000-square-foot former discount store became available, the Pomona Unified School District asked our firm to study the feasibility of converting it to an elementary school space. Through discussions with the Division of the State Architect, we developed a methodology by which the shell could be economically upgraded to Field Act standards. The project was completed, from schematic design through occupancy, in two years.
Thanks to the size of the shell, the building could accommodate 1,200 students. We divided the space into two distinct school clusters, each with separate administrations. The clusters share a large common space for dining and assembly. The rear parking area has been transformed into a playfield. On the street frontage a conference center and teacher training facility has been developed for district-wide use.
