Edmonton South East Division Police Station

Edmonton, AB

Site Plan & Exterior Treatment

Edmonton’s South Division Police Station arches across the site, creating a welcoming public entrance forecourt on the corner of Youville Drive and 28 Avenue in Millwood’s community, while at the same time, separating off the staff site functional areas located on the northwest portion of the site. The public building entrance is defined by a canopy reaching towards 28 Avenue from the entrance doors. The community oriented spaces have a unique, yet subtle architectural language distinguishing them from the remainder of the building - an image that is readily identifiable from the streetscape. The single-storey scaled front façade terraces backs into a second-storey massing that relates to the scale of the adjacent multi-storey hospital structure. The predominantly arched building massing maximizes the penetration of natural light levels into the public, administration and staff spaces.

Floor Plans & Interior Design

The administration and staff spaces are organized off of a central circulation spine, which creates an efficient functional plan with a sense of design clarity, while maximizing the penetration of natural light deep into the interior through a ribbon of clerestory glazing. The detention area, vehicle bays and building system areas have been organized into their own distinct shape, responding to the site grading and to the sustainable design objectives by separating out portions of the building with different energy profiles.

Sustainable Design Features

The building has earned LEED® Gold Certification, achieving 43% energy savings. The building has many environmentally responsible features such as the use of recycled building materials, certified wood, use of greywater from the showers for flushing toilets, storage of two months of site rainwater, operable windows to increase natural ventilation and a thermal chimney.
