The Columbus

1383 Marinaside Crescent, Vancouver, BC

The Columbus is located on a waterfront site on False Creek in Vancouver, and it is one building in an overall development complex by Concord Pacific Development. With 121 homes over 21 storeys, the building includes maritime references such as the "ship's prow", the "boat hull" roof, and the white metal panel cladding to reflect the distinctive character of its context.

This project received "The Golden Nugget" award as the best high-rise development in North America in 1998 and a Silver Georgie Award in 1999. The Architectural character of the tower is designed to reflect its maritime setting. The prow and curving facades of the tower form provide panoramic views of the water from the two suites per floor, which occupy the front half of the floor plate. The wider form of the rear half of the floor plate allows the two suites at the back to view past the front suites to the water.

The two halves of the building are expressed differently with the curving front half in gleaming glass and silver metal frame, and the more urban rear portion in rugged concrete frame with punched openings. The building is uniquely capped with a shimmering metal roof made up of compound curves resembling a boat hull.

The 7-storey low rise portion of the Columbus is divided into 3 vertical zones. At the ground level are two story townhouses with individual entries from the street and mews. Each townhouse has its own garage below grade with a direct and secure stair connection to the unit above. The mid levels are large units accessed by a central corridor. The upper two levels are in effect a penthouse level with internal stair access to roof top solariums and large roof decks. Amenities include an indoor pool, Jacuzzi, steam room exercise and change rooms.

Both tower and base elements are architecturally integrated to achieve a harmonious fit.

The entry canopy features drainage tubes to permit rain water to exit via spouts to a waterfall at the black granite side of each column terminating in a granite water catcher at the base of each column. This is a playful reminder of the rainy climate in which Vancouverites live.
