Alberta, Canada
Alberta SuperNet is a public private partnership involving the Government of Alberta and Bell West. It is an initiative to make affordable high-speed connectivity available to all schools, hospitals, libraries, government buildings and municipalities throughout the province. SuperNet is a high-speed broadband network that includes more than 12,000 kilometres of fibre optic and wireless components, and will provide Albertans with opportunities to access services (e.g. voice, data and video) at rates below those available in urban centers. Approximately 4,700 facilities in 422 communities across Alberta will have access to the network by the end of 2004.
IBI Group has been retained by Bell West to provide outside plant detailed design services for the extended portion of the network and customer access points. IBI Group’s role includes the field survey, detailed design of the fibre optic network and application for all permits and right-of-way approvals for Bell West to proceed with the construction of Alberta SuperNet.
To assist in the engineering exercise, IBI refined the use of spatial video technology to prepare base plans. The system produced significant benefits including accurate base plans and a video reference to minimize follow-up field visits and provided an accurate record of the ‘before’ conditions.
