Toll Services and Systems

Toll and revenue collection provides the financial backbone for capital improvements and operations for bridge, tunnel, highway, and transit services.

IBI Group brings a thorough understanding of transportation design, operations, and systems to help public and private sector clients build the business case, determine requirements, select appropriate technical solutions, support procurement, oversee implementation, and monitor operations.

A real strength of IBI Group is our ability to provide services as both advisor and supplier. This helps ensure that our advisory work results in system specifications and operational requirements that can be delivered and operated by contractors and agencies, and that our work as a supplier has a customer-centric operational focus.

System providers
As system providers, we’ve implemented toll systems ranging in size from single-plaza bridge crossings to the 39-plaza, 195-toll-lane Attiki Odos Motorway in Greece. We have worked with a wide range of technologies from vendors in North America, Europe, and South Asia.

We’ve developed, implemented, and supported back-office systems including transaction tracking databases, billing systems, and integrated customer service functionality. This experience spans all aspects of toll operations, including:

  • roadside solutions such as manual toll collection using cash, credit/debit, smart card, and electronic payment options; self-serve toll collection using coin machines or automatic payment machines; and electronic toll collection using transponders and/or image capture of vehicle license plates.
  • back-office solutions including managing transponders/ smartcards, setting up accounts, creating statements and mailings, interfacing with external financial services such as banks, credit processors, and cash transfer companies, tracking payments, identifying delinquent accounts, and processing images.

Advisory Services
We use our expertise to assist public and private (concessionaire) clients, who may be facility owners and/or operators, in matters relating to all-electronic / open road or plaza / attended lane tolling, managed lanes (e.g., high-occupancy / toll lanes, express lanes), and interoperability at the toll zone and the back-office.

Our services include conceptual design, technology assessment, detailed design, procurement assistance, implementation oversight and testing, and operations assistance. We address topics such as traffic projections, financial implications, technology, traffic operations, safety, customer relations, marketing, and maintenance.
