In many cities across the Northern Hemisphere, change is apparent. Temperatures are starting to dip, leaves are beginning to change colour and those warm, sunny days are becoming less common. Autumn is setting in, and by offering brief reviews of some of this year’s most interesting urbanism books, Planetizen is using it as a back to school opportunity for us all. Whether you’re heading into the classroom or not, educational opportunities abound. As city-makers, we should all be learning in the street, but good books also have a vital role in unlocking and inspiring us. Not an urban planner? There are great suggestions for architects and designers, and landscape architects as well. Curiously, I didn’t come across a similar list for civil engineers… Notably, a number of these books, across all disciplines, share space on this excellent, 100 “Best” Books on City-Making Ever Written? list by Brent Toderian. Mutual respect across city-making fields allows for critical reflection and the cross-pollination of good ideas, enabling better ways to shape the urban environments where we live, work and play.
