Voted UrbanToronto Best Building of 2018
To meet the growing demand for student housing in downtown Toronto, Ryerson University embarked on creating its largest student residence ever, and its first new residence in 25 years. Located at 186 Jarvis street, a five-minute walk from the heart of the Ryerson Campus, the IBI-designed tower offers space over 30 floors for 593 first and upper-year students.
The façades of the residence are clad in a dark grey-framed window wall system with a mix of glass and multi-toned blue spandrel panels. These façades also feature operable knee-height windows with full-size lights above. Slate-gray brick covers the southern part of the east façade of the tower.
The residence adds 191 fully furnished one-, two- and four-bedroom units to Ryerson’s student housing stock, each offering a shared kitchen and living room. Additional amenities located throughout the tower include study rooms, studio space, gym facilities, a yoga studio, and all the benefits of Ryerson’s Housing and Residence Life, such as academic support/accommodation, safety, security, and community development.
In the heart of Toronto, the residence is well situated with access to transit and nearby shopping facilities, sidewalks, and bicycle facilities. Our design for Ryerson University’s new, modern student residence is in keeping with Ryerson’s approach to city building, and reflects the core principles of the Ryerson Master Plan: urban intensification, putting people first through pedestrianization of the urban environment, and a commitment to design excellence.
