IBI Group’s ATMS to Improve Safety on BC Highways

BC’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and IBI Group roll out the Variable Speed Limit System on critical segments of the province’s highways.

IBI Group, a globally integrated architecture, planning, engineering, and technology firm, is proud to have participated in the launch of the Province of British Columbia’s new Variable Speed Limit System today.

BC’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure today rolled out the new advanced system on critical segments of the province’s Highway 1, Highway 99 (Sea to Sky), and the Coquihalla Highway. The $12.5 million dollar system uses real time data on road, weather, and traffic conditions, to adjust speed limits to prevailing conditions via a total of 47 digital signs along these highways. IBI Group was responsible for the design, development, and deployment of the underlying software that monitors and controls the system. The company’s software is used at the Ministry’s Regional Transportation Management Centre, and includes all necessary user interfaces for operators to use the system, supporting interfaces for roadside weather and traffic monitoring devices and all digital signs on the roadway. This software also supports the Province’s Drive BC traveller information system.

The system is expected to improve road safety by alerting drivers that they need to adjust their speeds to current conditions, and these adjusted speed limits will be fully enforceable by the RCMP. “It is important drivers understand that along these corridors, these signs aren’t speed readers — they are the law,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone.

The Variable Speed Limit System software supplied by IBI Group enhances the monitoring and control capabilities of the Ministry’s Regional Transportation Management Centre, and leverages their investment in the Advanced Traffic Management System IBI Group supplied the province in 2014,” said Homayoun Vahidi, IBI Group’s Project Director.
