Cardiff University’s Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC) has been named Life Science Research Building 2017, one of many prestigious awards it has won since its royal opening in March 2016.

The £44m centre received the highly acclaimed and international S-Lab Award at this year’s annual UK Science Park Association (UKSPA)/ S-Labs conference, beating an international shortlist of high-end research facilities.

Designed by IBI Group’s Learning+ team, CUBRIC is considered to be unique within Europe as a centre of excellence for brain imaging, and a world-leader for research in areas such as psychology, psychiatry and neuroscience. The collaborative research facility was described by the judges as “precise and beautifully detailed multi-sensory design” and “a special place”.

IBI Group Architect and Studio Director, Richard Golledge said: “We are immensely proud that CUBRIC has achieved yet another distinguished accolade. It truly represents how unique this research facility is and how design is a crucial element to support collaboration and engagement between researchers.”

Cardiff University Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Karen Holford said: “It’s a great honour for Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre to pick up a significant award like this.”

This award follows a string of impressive accolades presented to CUBRIC, including two award wins from The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Wales in April, where it won in the ‘Project of the Year’ and ‘Design through Innovation’ categories. In addition, CUBRIC has also won a Green Apple Award for the Built Environment and was named runner up in the ‘Buildings that Inspire’ category of the 2017 Guardian University Awards.

The multi-award winning building was built by BAM Construction and was officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen in March, 2016.
