The Alberta Association of Architects (AAA) hosts a biannual conference that brings speakers together from around the globe to share ideas, innovation and ingenuity. The session provides a platform for over 450 architects, designers, and academics to come together and collaborate in the inspirational Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel.

The 2018 Banff Session was titled The Creatives and focused on four creative sources as the sub-themes for the event:

  • Generational Inspiration: Engaging with the past, present and future in our ongoing search for inspiration through generational symbiosis
  • Arts Inspiration: Music, design, movement, literature and architecture are often seen as promising sources for ideas. We often look to the work of these creative counterparts to spark inspiration.
  • Technological Inspiration: Imagination fuels technological advancement. Both archaic and new technologies can be used to fuel new thoughts.
  • Unusual Inspiration: Inspiration is found all around us in nature, colours, shapes, or experiences.

Additional topics relevant to architecture and interior design include legislation, health, accessibility, technology, energy conservation, and business management.

We asked attendee and IBI Group Architect Susanna Pon to give us her impressions of the event. In her opinion, “it was great to see what other architecture firms are designing in Canada and the US, and how they are addressing a pivotal point where technology is becoming more dominant.”

Susanna was particularly inspired by the presentations from Marshall Brown and Juliane Wolf over the course of session:

  • Marshall Brown [Chicago] has a diverse body of work that not only includes architecture but urban planning perspectives. Their projects question and challenge traditional views of neighbourhoods and how society can be shaped by social experiments with space planning and ownership.
  • German Architect Juliane Wolf from Studio Gang [Chicago].  It was treat to see the creative processes behind some of my favourite new buildings in Chicago!
