TORONTO, ONTARIO (February 9, 2022) – Global design and technology firm, IBI Group (TSX: IBG), has been contracted by the City of Toronto to provide design, contract administration, engineering, and construction inspection services in the northern Etobicoke district as part of the City’s Basement Flooding Protection Program (BFPP). The project is part of the City’s larger initiative to provide residents protection from the effects of basement flooding while upgrading its existing storm and sewer infrastructure, which was not designed to withstand frequent, severe storms. Over the next five years, IBI Group will leverage its water management and civil engineering expertise to help the City reduce the risk of basement flooding by providing sustainable solutions that will relieve pressure on the existing sewer and water system.

“The increase in extreme weather events in Canada and abroad has highlighted the benefit of upgrading existing stormwater infrastructure,” said IBI Group CEO, Scott Stewart. “We look forward to leveraging our water management expertise while working with the City of Toronto through their Basement Flooding Protection Program to improve the quality of life for residents in flood-prone areas and protect the natural environment.”

The City of Toronto recognizes the frequency and severity of storms has increased because of climate change, which has put unsustainable pressure on its existing stormwater infrastructure. As a result, many home and business owners have experienced basement flooding causing damage to their valuables and impacting their ability to operate. In response, the City established the BFPP in 2006 as a multi-year initiative dedicated to tackling the adverse effects flooding has on the environment and urban space in Toronto through sewer system improvements and other flood protection measures.

IBI Group will address the challenges by updating the existing infrastructure, developed in the 1950s, which will improve the system’s sustainability through energy-efficient measures while minimizing disruption to the neighbourhood’s residents and natural landscape. The firm’s work will include upgrades to the storm and sanitary sewers; installation of high-capacity-inlet catch basins and inlet control devices; and local road resurfacing and reconstruction.

In addition to IBI’s design and engineering services, the firm will be managing construction staging and optimizing resource allocations so that this large volume of work can be effectively delivered within the program timeline. Once IBI’s engineering design solutions are implemented, the threat of roadway and basement flooding caused by extreme weather events should be greatly reduced in the area.

The project will build upon IBI Group’s environmental assessment work with the City of Toronto’s BFPP. IBI has worked on multiple improvement master plans that include detailed examinations of existing sanitary and storm drainage systems and remedial alternatives for flood-prone areas in Toronto. IBI Group’s experience studying Toronto’s water and wastewater infrastructure through projects including the Basement Flooding Remediation and Water Quality Improvement Master Plan — Area 36, will allow the firm to provide the most effective response informed by its experience and wastewater expertise.
