MANCHESTER, UK (May 9, 2022) – One of the UK’s largest design and technology firms, IBI Group, announces two new strategic hires as it expands its presence throughout the country. Charles Stokes joins from AECOM as Studio Director as a key appointment working within the Healthcare team nationally, bringing extensive design expertise in the design of women’s and children’s health facilities, as well as for critical and emergency care centres. Maja Nesdale joins from Gensler as Principal in IBI Group’s Buildings sector, where she is experienced at delivering projects across varying scales, internationally and in the UK.

Developing his early career at IBI Group, Charles delivered flagship hospital projects across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Of his reappointment, Charles says,“I’m very much looking forward to working on major IBI healthcare projects across the UK again, particularly with colleagues who share similar values and an ethos of design excellence. Spending more time directly engaged with clients, supporting their projects, and assisting them in delivering a shared vision that meets the future demands upon their services, will be central to my focus.”

Previously a Principal at Gensler, Maja Nesdale will help deliver successful projects and thought leadership for IBI Group through the research that manifests from her designs. Maja shares of her appointment, “I am very excited to be joining IBI Group at a time when the opportunity for growing all of our sectors across the knowledge economy is really strong. I have a strong interest in academic research and development, and I will be engaging across all sectors to grow our business with a particular focus on innovation districts.”

As the world’s fifth-largest design practice as determined by Building Design in the World Architecture 100 ranking, IBI currently holds a market-leading position in design excellence for private and public sector clients across healthcare, urban living, life sciences R&D, and education, with award-winning projects in the North, including masterplanning, public realm and urban design for Barnsley town centre’s £200 million regeneration project, The Glass Works. These senior appointments support the firm’s plans to grow in both the UK and international markets.

Of the appointments, IBI Group’s Regional Director for UK & Ireland, Tony Burley, states,  “Charles and Maja join at an exciting time as we’re expanding and reshaping our business. Their talent brings gravitas to our leadership team; not least their ability to collaborate, which we see as key to our future success. We’re witnessing far more overlap between our market sectors these days with the advent of digital technologies and their inevitable crossover in our smarter urban futures.”

In May 2022, IBI will complete its newest location in Manchester, adding to its 60+ global locations. The hub, located within the city’s NOMA development, will form part of one of the largest mixed-use redevelopment projects in the northwest. IBI explicitly chose the new re-development as a new centralized space for the city’s most exciting technology companies, aligning with the organization’s own focus on smart technologies and resilient future cities.
