Barnsley Town Centre Redevelopment
Our multidisciplinary design team is working on an ambitious project to transform and regenerate Barnsley’s town centre, comprehensively redesigning the heart of the once industrial town.

Re-invigorating Barnsley with a dynamic, 21st Century market town centre
The town of Barnsley emerged from the convergence of a series of historic trading routes as early as the 11th Century. Recently, the town has faced a number of challenges – from the demise of its mining industry to recent failed regeneration projects – but the market, granted a Royal Charter in 1249, has remained. IBI Group is leading the project to transform Barnsley Town Centre into a thriving, dynamic, 21st Century market town.
Working closely with the local people, market traders and the Barnsley Council, the IBI design team has advocated and secured the market’s position at the heart of the project – a unique selling point that will distinguish the town from its neighbours. The scheme, guided by a masterplan, includes a new public open space (the Market Square), a significant extension and refurbishment of the market, a new public library, refurbishment of the metropolitan centre, a cinema, shopping arcade, feature footbridge and high quality parking.
The regeneration of Barnsley will make a significant difference to the local people and open up the opportunity for further investment in the once coal-dependent town.
