Norbury Lounge Chair

This ergonomic design was specifically created for use in mental health units where healing, safety, comfort, and respect for environment are vital to patient recovery.

In 2005, the NHS trust at South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare were awarded a grant that allowed them to refurbish the Norbury Ward – their Intensive Care Mental Health Unit, which had developed a reputation as an uncomfortable place for both patients and caregivers alike. Previously, much of the furniture was plastic – partly due to cost, but also to minimize danger in the event of chairs being thrown at staff members.

Nurturing through design

After consulting with staff and service users, our design partners at Knightsbridge used their expertise to reach a solution that addressed the unique needs of this user group, with features including:

  • Natural ergonomic form
  • Weighted base
  • Non retractable screws
  • Fixed cushion
  • Leather upholstery
  • Over 40 colour combinations
  • Toughened inverted stitched seams
  • Reinforced dovetailed joints
  • Materials from sustainable forestry

The resulting design played an important role in the ward’s renovation, and earned recognition at the Building Better Healthcare Awards 2008 – Highly Commended in the category of Best Interiors Product.
