Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Cancer Centre

In designing the Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Cancer Centre, IBI adopted an holistic approach through which the building’s interiors, landscaping and art are integrated to create a tranquil and reassuring environment. The IBI team engaged with a lead artist, ensuring that every step of the patient journey is enhanced through a design that expresses Macmillan’s passion, values and commitment to providing the highest quality patient experience.

The facility embodies a non-institutional character, maximising opportunities for views of both external landscape and private courtyards. The main waiting area overlooks one of the internal courtyards, where moving images of a gardener and a hedgehog are displayed on to rendered external walls in order to distract and cheer waiting patients and those accompanying them.

The project provides clinical spaces which are flexible, including a large treatment area which can be sub-divided to cater for the differing needs of patients. The manipulation of space, volume and natural light, selection of materials and integration of art, ensure that the physical and emotional needs of patients are met, and appropriate privacy and confidentiality maintained while assisting delivery of the highest standard of care. The facility has been designed to be flexible enough to cope with significant change as the service evolves over time.
